Online options at Furman for Fall 2023!
Good evening from the Office of Graduate Studies at Furman! Please share my email with your teachers to make them aware of some exciting online options at Furman for this fall term:
First, both our Literacy and School Leadership programs are moving to an online format this fall! Depending on when teachers begin, they can complete the literacy M.A. or +30 (if they already have a master’s degree) in approximately two years. Some of these classes are offered completely asynchronously; others utilize a hybrid/blended format, with Zoom meetings to explain concepts, discuss content, and answer their questions—but with good internet connection, teachers can complete these courses from almost anywhere! The literacy program leads to certification as a K-12 literacy teacher and literacy coach (after 5 years’ teaching experience). It also covers the R2S endorsement!
Second, the School Leadership program also uses a hybrid/blended format. Our professors do not simply post work to Moodle and expect teachers to teach themselves; their intent is to encourage community among their students and themselves. For this program, teachers take a class every 8 weeks and can complete this program in approximately 20 months. While the School Leadership program leads to certification as a principal/assistant principal, it can also prepare teachers for other district-level positions, as well.
Finally, we will be offering one (of two) courses needed for the ESOL endorsement. This course will be online for the first 8 weeks of fall term. The other course needed for this endorsement will be offered online during the summer term.
Tuition is $425 per credit; each course carries 3 credits…so $1275 per course. Any of these courses can be used toward a teacher’s +18 or +30—or to renew their teaching certificate, in addition to a master’s degree. The only other fees would be a $55 application fee and books. Even though our registration deadline is tomorrow (August 11), please let your teachers know that I will be happy to work with them any way that I can! Since classes do not begin until the week of August 22, we do have a bit of wiggle room. Please encourage your teachers to contact me right away if they are interested.
Thank you for your time and for sharing this information with your teachers,
Kay
